A historic beach resort on Kauna'oa Bay along Hawai'i Island's Kohala Coast, conceived by Laurance S. Rockefeller after a swim in the bay and opened in 1965 as the island's first resort. Built on former Parker Ranch land, it was designed to conform to, rather than intrude upon, its setting of turquoise water, lava rock and ranchland with views of Maunakea's summit.
